Items belonging to the Three Jewels, even the smallest ones, such as a sheet of paper, cannot be wasted or casually ruined. It may start out as one sheet of paper, but over time it will become many sheets. By wasting a single sheet of paper, you are already destroying the property of the Sangha.There is a saying, %u201cDo not take even a blade of grass or a stick of wood without permission.%u201d Taking without permission is stealing. We cannot take other people%u2019s things, even something as worthless as a blade of grass or a twig, without their permission; otherwise that would be a theft. We cannot casually use other people%u2019s belongings without their knowing, for that would also be a violation of the precept against stealing. Even things as small as a needle and thread, if they are given, are considered offerings. The property of the monastery may not be used carelessly or squandered. Even monastics cannot give away goods belonging to the monastery to others. You may give away your personal belongings, such as an article of clothing that you no longer wear.
