This is called buying friends. It is wrong to give gifts to make people like you or feel obliged to aid and support you. Monastics must pay particular attention to this. Destroying the things of the monastery does not refer only to a large quantity of items, but merely giving away a sheet of paper, a piece of thread, or even a grain of rice as a personal gift. Even monastics do not have the right to give away community items. They can give away their personal things, but they may not give away community goods, even if it is just a stick of incense.There are those who constantly deceive and lie to laypeople, who go against the precepts such as the five precepts, the ten precepts, the ten major and forty-eight minor precepts, or the two hundred and fifty precepts. Such people fail to honor the moral precepts. And those who commit many other evil deeds will fall into the Relentless Hell where for tens of trillions of eons they will seek escape in vain. Such people commit not just one kind, but many different kinds of evil deeds that we could not even imagine. They are bound to fall into the Relentless Hell where they will have no way to escape for an extremely long duration of time.S%u016btra:Beings who steal the wealth and property of the Sangha, including its grains, food and drink, and clothing, or who take anything at all that was not given to them, will fall into the Relentless Hell where for tens of trillions of eons they will seek escape in vain.Commentary:Suppose there are beings who steal the wealth and property of the Sangha%u2026 What items belonging to the monastery do they steal? Money, grains, food, or clothing. Once a great Bodhisattva who made the vow, %u201cIf people commit the five heinous acts, the four grave offenses, or the ten evil deeds, I can save them. However if they steal from the Sangha, whether it be a blade of grass or a stick of wood, I cannot save them because there is simply no way to do so.%u201d
