The Venerable One, who lived during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty, was a national master known as the %u201cWise One.%u201d The emperor conferred that title upon him due to his extraordinary wisdom. His Dharma name was Huiyue, and the meaning of his lay name was Virtuous Simplicity. He was from Wushang of Dongyang in Zhejiang.As a youth, he was unusually spiritual. When he was very young%u2014as a virgin youth%u2014many extraordinarily auspicious events happened to him. He continually wished to free himself from mundane life.Due to his past history and his roots of goodness, he always wanted to enter monastic life. But did not know where to go or whom he should follow. He did not know where the best place would be for him to leave the home-life. He was ambivalent about which place because there were many monasteries and many monastics, and he could not figure out which monk he should take as his master. One day, he unexpectedly encountered a monk, right when he was in a quandary%u2014when he did not know where he should go %u2013 he met a monk whom he asked about this matter. %u201cWhere would be a good place for me to go to leave the home-life?%u201d The monk pointed to the east. And what did he say? %u201cThe Buddhadharma is flourishing in the Shanzh%u014dng area of Zh%u00e8ji%u0101ng.%u201d The monk pointed towards the east, saying: %u201cDharma thrives in Shanzhong, and you should leave the home-life there.%u201d He said, %u201cIn Shangzhong, the Buddhadharma is prolific.
